"Only God is Awesome, Bubba," Anna told her brother while they were playing "Doggy". Playing "Doggy" between these two is quite amusing to watch. Anna takes Mazzie's pink leash and clips it onto the back of Josiah's a.k.a "Doggy's" shirt collar. I often wonder how in the world he can walk on all fours for such a long time.
As I sat at the kitchen table this morning reading the Decatur Daily, my ears honed in on this blip of conversation my youngest two were having. As Anna was putting Doggy down for a nap in the dog kennel (by the way, she kicked poor Mazzie out for Doggy to rest so I had to put her in big brother's room to take her morning nap), I hear Anna repeat the words that I told her earlier after breakfast.
"Anna, only God is Awesome," I said. You see, lately she's been saying "this is awesome" or "that is so awesome," pertaining to different things throughout the day. Hmm, too much TV lately? Perhaps!
Have you ever had an experience so ingrained in your mind that whenever you hear, see or smell something, a memory of it appears out of thin air? It's like whenever I smell the perfume Eternity I immediately revert back to my Curtis High School days. The smell of dirt and leather puts me back on the ball field during my softball playing days. Oddly enough, whenever I hear someone referring to something as "awesome," or during those times when I slip myself and use that phrase, the voice of my Aunt Barbara appears out of thin air.
"Rachel, only God is Awesome," she would tell me, down in her Jersey Shore house where we often lived out our summers. Of course, for those of you who were born in the 1970's, saying the word "awesome" was as common as saying "hello!" That, along with 'cool!', 'gynx!', 'sike!' and 'punchbuggy RED!' as well.
In any event, I would get so bothered to hear Aunt Barbara remind me that I should be using that word for God and God alone. I'd roll my eyes, of course, and think (or say) "whatever!" She just took it so seriously! Why was that? Why did it annoy me?
Pride? Guilt? Ignorance?
All of the above?
Several years later and a few (just a few!) grey hairs wiser, I realize that Aunt Barbara was right. You see, for something to be awesome, it would have to merit awe. Awe (of course, I had to look it up) is a noun defined as "an overwhelming feeling of reverence, admiration, fear, etc., produced by that which is grand, sublime, extremely powerful, or the like." Wow! A car can't be awesome. Neither can a party or even a best friend. It may be considered a slang word now but I'm sticking with Babs:

I kept a smile to myself after I heard Anna give this very wise advice to her 'little' brother (he is, in fact, larger although younger) and acted as if I was very intrigued by the article I was reading. What almost put me over the edge with joyous laughter was the adorable statement she made immediately following:
"Bubba, it's so funny how God is out there floating around in space everywhere, isn't it?"
Thank you, Lord, for our children!
